SUSPECTED WOMB INFECTION · URGENT VETERINARY ASSESSMENT

Worried about pyometra? Call a vet urgently.

Pyometra is a serious infection of the womb. If your unspayed female dog is unwell, particularly after a season, don’t wait for a routine appointment or a pregnancy scan.

Call Thompson’s Pet Care in Seaforth on 0151 272 0651 during opening hours. When we’re closed, call Wirral Pet 999 on 0151 332 9999.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Discharge is not always present.

Signs can include unusual vaginal discharge, increased drinking, vomiting, a swollen abdomen, reduced appetite or marked tiredness. Some dogs have a closed womb infection with no visible discharge.

These signs can have other causes, but a sick dog needs veterinary assessment. Tell the team when her last season was and what has changed. If she is collapsing or rapidly worsening, say so immediately when you call.

ASSESSMENT AT THOMPSON’S

The examination and scan work together.

The vet will consider your dog’s history and examination. Ultrasound can help identify an enlarged, fluid-filled womb; blood tests or other investigations may also be needed. A scan alone does not replace the full assessment.

We offer diagnostic ultrasound at our Seaforth practice. Suspected pyometra should be discussed as an urgent health concern, not booked as a routine £40 pregnancy scan.

TREATMENT DEPENDS ON THE DOG

A prompt plan, explained by the vet.

Surgery is commonly recommended for pyometra. Our practice offers surgery and, where the vet considers it appropriate, medical treatment. Antibiotics may form part of treatment, but they should not be assumed to cure a womb infection on their own.

The vet will explain the options, urgency, costs and any further support your dog needs. Treatment choice depends on her condition and the assessment; medical management is not suitable for every case.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Pyometra and urgent care

Can my dog have pyometra without discharge?

Yes. A closed womb infection may not produce visible discharge. If an unspayed female dog is unwell, tell the vet about her recent season and symptoms even if there is no discharge.

Can I book a pregnancy scan to check?

Call and explain the symptoms first. A possible infection needs urgent veterinary assessment and may require tests and treatment beyond a routine pregnancy scan.

Can antibiotics treat it?

Antibiotics may be part of a veterinary treatment plan, but should not be relied on as a stand-alone cure. The vet will assess whether surgery or carefully selected medical management is appropriate.

How much will assessment or treatment cost?

This depends on the examination, tests, treatment and support needed. Ask the team for an estimate when you call. The £40 pregnancy-scan fee is not a pyometra investigation or treatment price.

Where do I go outside opening hours?
